Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat, the adaptation of the 90s video game of the same name smashed, kicked and punched itself onto the big screen in 1995 when I was 12 years old! I think that’s why I love this movie so much, it got me at the right age and hooked me. I was a huge fan of the computer games since the original Mortal Kombat destroyed Street Fighter II at the arcades due its violence, blood, and gory Fatalities, my friends already emulated our favourite characters so it was amazing to see them on the big screen! I remember running about pretending i was a character after watching this movie the first time around.
When watching it you have to remember its a 90s era movie. Yes it’s aged well in terms of its visuals, but its weak script, subpar cheesy acting, and dialogue that will make you cringe. Still all that said its actually pretty good, the silly plot doesn’t matter because your not watching it for the story line or character development as much as the superb action sequences which are awesome, if not over the top. If you’re a fan like I am, you will see all your old favourite moves and fantastic ending blows! To look at yes, it comes over as a B movie, the only big name being Christopher Lambert as Raiden, but it has its charm and it has a lot of the old school characters such as Scorpion, Sub Zero, Reptile, Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, Kano and Goro who was an impossible bastard to beat in the computer game! The ending is a bit naff half expected a guy to pop up on the right and say TOASTY! Fans of the game will get that… I hope!
Why did I choose this movie, I seen it in the video shop and just had to have a watch. Its been flipping ages since I seen it. There is a few sequels and another big screen movie in the works, set to be more gory and real! In all its 130 min of kicking ass and cheesy quotes, all you would expect. Only way it could have been better, apart from the obvious, is if it was an 18 and went more gory and hardcore. Go rent it only a quid from Xtra-vision.
