This is Spinal Tap

This is Spinal Tap, Rob Reiner fake documentary that dances the fine line between stupid and clever and instantly creates a new genre the “mockumentery” . The story and music was writtin by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Rob Reiner, they play the characters they created in one of the wittiest, and wisest films about being a band ever made.  I think that younger audiences today could well be fooled into believing it is an actual documentary of some ageing 80s rock band. Huge cult following and favorite of rock and metal fans, the movie is shown on the big screen at festivals, i even heard the movie had such a hit cult following the actors actually toured after it!

Spinal Tap delivers a genuine plot, director Marti DiBergi (Rob Reiner) is making a documentary about British heavy metal group Spinal Tap, documenting their attempts to reconnect with an American audience. Tap consists of David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) on vocals, Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) on lead guitar, Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) on bass, backed up by a keyboardist and drummer. They are also managed by the barely competent Ian Faith (Tony Hendra). Its full of amazing one liners and scenes such as setting off an airport metal detector with a cucumber wrapped in tinfoil, the band being lost back stage, Jeanine Pettibone (June Chadwick) being criticised for “like and Australians nightmare”, and arguments over the offensive cover art of the album “smell the glove”. Its over the top and understated all at once and perfectly, perfectly timed.

Why did I choose this movie, I had been talking about watching it for ages and was in the mood for something stupidly funny. The wittey one liners crack me up and it even manages to pull some emotion out of you with the threat of the band breaking up. I maybe have went too far into it but its ah hard movie to talk about without spilling a little something. I would say its a must watch, a nights easy going comedy that you can wonder in and out of and find it funny even if your watching it again and again.
