The Grey

The Grey, John Ottway (Liam Neeson) is returning home as part of an oil drilling team in Alaska, when disaster hits and their plane crashes in the middle of nowhere. Surviving the crash isn’t as lucky as you may think when you find out that the chances of living through harsh winter conditions whilst being hunted down by wolves are slim… well unless your Liam Neeson, if I survived a plane crash in a frozen Alaskan wilderness, only to be hunted down by bloodthirsty evil wolves the movie would be called the brown.

Ottway rallies the handful of survivors that are left from the best plane crash scene since lost, and using survival skills that would make Bear Grylls look like a lost little girl leads them on a epic trek south in hopes of being rescued. Jumping in and out of a dreamlike flash back mode immerses you in the quietness long enough to be blindsided by the horror that follows as the survivors are slowly and horrifically picked off. The grey is a journey, its not an all out action flick like taken, or …It is a movie strongly built on the characters, all of which are believable and real no matter how extreme you think the situation is. They look like roughnecks they act like roughnecks, hard men doing a hard job in. The amazing thing to see is the journey they go through, from caring only for themselves to fighting and caring for each other. Its not all about mussel bound heroes saving the day but more about this group of fragile men desperately fighting for their survival.

Why did I choose this movie, it was a trip to the cinema and it I found myself in the mood to watch a gripping, exciting and surprisingly emotional tale of survival. I wont spoil the ending but as I left the cinema I has the feeling it was not the ending anyone expected or wanted, for me it was the only way it could of ended. Actually the fact that it may of pissed people off gives it more points! Go have a watch, highly enjoyable couple hours entertainment Of course no one does Norn Irish as good as Liam Neeson, few parts your half expecting him to turn around to those wolves and say “Ill Nack Yar Ballax In”.
