Blade II

Yes I’m skipping Blade one which is a shame but i will get round to watching it! so the plot.. A rare mutation has occurred within the vampire community. The Reaper. A vampire so consumed with a voracious bloodlust that they prey on other vampires as well as humans. This not being bad enough victims who are not ripped apart in the feeding frenzy and who are unlucky enough to survive are transformed into Reapers themselves. This rapidly expanding population threatens the existence of vampires, and humans alike so Blade (Wesley Snipes) along with Whistler(Kris Kristofferson) form an uneasy alliance with the vampires he once hunted in order to combat the Reapers before the bloodthirsty pandemic devours the earth!

The second of the trinity Blade II is a nice we film that stands on its own other than going through the painful explanation of where he came from, who he and everyone else is all over again. Since I however am starting with the middle ill give a wee back story… Blade is a vampire hunter in the Marvel Comics Universe. Basically his mother was bitten by a vampire while he was in the womb thus giving him all of their strengths and none of their weaknesses most notably the ability to walk in daylight. I never read the comics, but if I put that Marvel movie spin on it then its not all that bad a flick. It is essentially a series of stylish, violent battles between Blade and his various enemies, along with smart ass glib remarks thrown in by the Bloodpack most notably by Ron Perlman, and of course Kris Kristofferson that guy just cracks me up.

Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) directs this movie with his visual style as impressive as always and heavily relying on visual effects, all working towards making this movie far bigger then the first one. I personally preferred the first one but its still worth a watch. What you get is Over the top gruesome bloody martial arts gun slinging ultra-violent sequel not bad for a movie just short of 2 hours. Grab some pop-corn set down your Stephanie Myer and just let the gore rush over you. Its not a movie grounded in reality, and by that I mean its own comic book origins but I could be wrong! I had planned on slating this when I watched it but when it came to it I can’t, where ever it may fall blood guts and ultra violence picks it up!

IN TIME

Written and Directed Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, The Truman Show, The Terminal) a man fascinated by the impact of futuristic technologies on society,I loved Gattaca which explored a civilization in which genetic tinkering rendered natural reproduction obsolete. In time creates a dystopian vision of where overreaching science has brought immortality to mankind but at what cost? Every child on earth is bio-engineered to stop ageing at 25. Born with a time stamp, a sort of neon clock on their forearm, it is programmed to start counting down when they hit 25 to the day they die. Everyone gets a year, the poor being so much in debt; find their time up within a week, while the rich live for decades, centauries and eons.

In Time is set a couple hundred years in the future, Will Salas (Justin Timberlake) lives with his mother Rachel (Olivia Wilde) in the ghettos of Dayton. When Will saves Henry Hamilton (Matt Bomer) from being killed in the ghetto bar by Minute Men, he wakes to find over a hundred years on his clock. Henry it seems is a prosperous man who just has become tired of life and decided to time himself out. Will’s change of fate lasts long enough for him to briefly experience the luxury of New Greenwich but being accused for the death of Mr Hamilton will go’s on the run with Sylvia Weis (Amanda Seyfried) the daughter of Time Baron Philippe Weis (Vincent Kartheiser). The two go on a crime spree across timezones perused always by Time-keeper Raymond Leon(Cillian Murphy) and the Minute Men.

Why did I choose this movie, Its Bonnie & Clyde-meets-Robin Hood action thriller with wicked car chases, heists, and guns. Its the sort of movie that would of worked really well as a TV series. There is so much that could have so easily been expanded on, like the minute men and time keepers. Its been given mixed reviews but I think it was outstanding, look past the few plot holes and some cheesy lines and you have a really good interesting and if you dare thought provoking movie.  The Blu-ray version has a extra called “The Minutes” which goes into more detail behind the science involved. It is a good way to appease the nerds without boring everyone else. I myself am one of those nerds but I think it was good that the film makers didn’t go into full on detail during the movie in regards to the science.

Beauty and the Beast

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, a young prince lived in a shining castle. Although he had everything his heart desired, the prince was spoiled, selfish, and unkind. One winter’s night, an old beggar woman came to the castle and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold. Repulsed by her haggard appearance the prince pretty much tells her to fuck off, but she warns him not to be deceived by appearances.  Slamming the door on the old bitches face was the beging of all his problems because as it happens the beggar is an enchantress and curses the prince, turning him into a hideous beast and all of his servants become things. Enter Belle a beautiful, independent, headstrong bookworm, dissatisfied with life, longing for adventure and to escape the clutches of Gaston the town’s hero and quite possibly Disney’s most rapey character ever!

Belle gets her wish when a wrong turn taken by her father Maurice, lands him in the clutches of the Beast, who only agrees to set him free if Belle agrees to stay with him! Belle gradually she breaks through his bastardly exterior with the help of some talking furniture and discovers that he is actually a decent guy who cares about her, despite being a giant horned gorilla prone to bipolar fits of rage hurling constant insults at her and who comes close to bitch slapping the shit out of her on more than one occasion. This isn’t to mention the obvious fact that Belle’s relationship with Beast shows all the signs of Stockholm syndrome! Belle does fall in love thus lifting the magical enchantment turning Beast into a handsome prince, so all is well that ends well.

Why did I choose this movie, well because it is full of fantastic morals like Kidnapping is romantic, just because he’s abusive, doesn’t mean he’s not a really good guy and it’s okay to be ugly, as long as you’re rich. In seriousness Beauty and the Beast is a entertaining wee show, telling us all to love from within and for the right reasons. My favourite bits are the songs that will stick in your head forever, I was singing “bonjour” for a week after! I will rate it against other Disney movies and say its not a bad wee show, not my over all favourite but id say give it a wee watch… aye why not!

Dead Poets Society

The film is a simple, yet richly complex look at what life is about. Unconventional English teacher John Keating (Robin Williams) uses poetry to inspire his students at Welton Academy for Boys to be something more than what’s expected of them. Carpe diem, seize the day is the principal lesson in all of his classes, however the stuffy upper management does not like the thought of their future doctors and lawyers perusing goals and aspirations that conflict with what has been laid out for them. The poem Walden by Henry David Thoreau “I went to the woods to suck the marrow out of life.” makes the boys sneak out and re-institute a secret society that Keating used to run called the Dead Poets Society. Rebelling against the establishment with the use of poetry could seem stuffy and cornybut it’s entertaining.

He was their inspiration. He made their lives extraordinary. Robin Williams is the billed actor and received an Oscar Nomination for his deeply moving and dramatic work, and rightfully so, but the movie really belongs to the boys. A fine class roomful of young performers Ethan Hawke(Gattaca , Training Day) Robert Sean Leonard(House) Josh Charles(S.W.A.T.) and the others. Its hard to go into the movie too much, this happens with ones i like as i would rather let you just watch and enjoy but it tugs at the heartstrings, a perfectly balanced tragedy with an uplifting ending along with messages of unity and friendship that will by the end, if your anything like me, leave you witha tear in your eye.

Why did I choose this movie, it is old favourite of mine and I am deeply ashamed I do not yet own it properly. I will definitely be on the lookout for the special edition or a blu-ray.  It received four nominations at the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, so its not just your everyday movie. It will keep you entertained and reaching for your favorite poetry books. It really really is well worth a watch… Seize the day, watch this film!

Hot Rod

American comedy troupe The Lonely Island, are the masterminds behind this freakishly random and horrendously funny work of pure genus. Adam Samberg, Jorma Taccone both co-wrote and starred alongside director Akiva Schaffer who had a nice cameo, the three using a comedy style that had worked wonders for them have created something of a mixture of Talladega Nights with Napoleon Dynamite. It is no wonder Hot Rod has become such a clut classic, low budget, hit and miss comedy thats not to everyone’s taste, a movie that can withstand being watched over and over again, in fact I think it is the type of movie that will get better the second time around!

What we have as far as a plot or story line gos is this.. Rod Kimble(Adam Samberg) is a daredevil and self-proclaimed stuntman who isn’t very good at that, but wants to follow in his late father’s footsteps. Living at home with his mum Marie(Sissy Spacek) and his hard-ass stepdad Frank(Ian McShane), with whom Rod has a standing weekly appointment to physically fight to prove whose more of a man. When the news is broke that Frank needs a heart transplant that they cannot afford Rod is devastated, as he loses any hope of defeating him in hand-to-hand combat. Rods friends and would be stunt crew band together to help him raise the $50,000 needed for the transplant in a series of stunts that rod will perform for money! This innder circle include younger brother Kevin (Jorma Taccone) Dave (Bill Hader) Rico(Danny McBride) sexy neighbour Denise(Isla Fisher). To be honest hot rod does not ask you too much as far as attention to story or plot it offers something much more rewarding… laugh’s and lots of them!

Why did I choose this movie, look at the cast! Not only do we have The Lonely Island crew but also Bill Hader, Danny McBride and Chris Parnell, men who are behind such comedys as 21 Jump Street, Anchorman, Your Highness , Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express aww I could go on! What you get is 88 minutes or so of laugh out loud and laugh louder comedy that you will wanna watch over and over again!!
